automotive work area safety basics

Planning for safety is the first sign of a conscientious hobbyist. Just a small amount of forethought can provide hours of safe auto repairs for anyone who walks into your work area.

1. Keep it clean Keep clutter and garbage and chaos out of your way. You shouldn’t have to walk through a maze to get to or from anything in your work area.

2. Plan for “just in case” Keep emergency items like fire extinguishers and first aid kits full and up to date in a corner of your work area. You may never need them, but you’ll be glad they’re there if you do.

3. Know your tools Misusing tools is a no-no in any setting, if for no other reason than the chance of minor injury. Understand every tool you use, know its capability and its limitation and use it accordingly.

4. Plan for emergencies Always have a clear escape route (see #1) in case of fire or chemical leaks, always have a list of emergency numbers on hand and always let someone know where you are when you’re in your shop.
